Over the years I have often been perplexed, vexed and confused by the question “Are you Jewish?” In my time I have considered myself Jewish, Rosicrucian, Unitarian, agnostic, atheist and Buddhists yet when asked the question “Are you Jewish?” my answer has always been YES. I have always understood when this question is posed it is not an inquiry into my belief structure the name of the religious institution I attend nor my philosophic persuasion. It inquires as to my “blood,” who my parents or grandparents were, not whether I particularly believe in a doctrine or a form of a religious worship. It is rather in the nature of “show me your papers” rather than tell me what is in your heart.
Frequently I reflect on a chance encounter at a bar in London when a handsome young man asked in a crisp, pointed way “Are you Jewish ” I anticipated some kind of challenge, a crack, some kind of a verbal provocation when, to my surprise he responded “So am I “ to my affirmation.” Shalom Aleichem,” I said to which he replied “Aleichem Shalom” and we exchanged grins. Questions !
I recall in the tender years of my youth in the Bronx the question was usually “What is your nationality?’ again not an inquiry into my citizenship nor the flag to which I might owe allegiance but rather “are you Jewish ?” At best we now understand one must ask the right question. Yes ?
